Many of the ornamental plants on campus are cultivated for their beauty and not their edibility. However, some trees and shrubs are edible and are quite delicious! This tour will show you some of the trees with edible fruits on Purdue's campus.

Castanea mollissima (Chinese Chestnut)

The Chinese chesnut has edible nuts encased in spiny burs. The nuts are 2-3 inches in diameter.

Morus rubra (Red Mulberry)

The fruit on mulberry trees appear to be raspberries and are ready to harvest in late spring.

Fagus grandifolia (American Beech)

The fruit of the American Beech trees appear in the summer, and are ripe when the spiny husk is reddish brown and have split open. The inner nut is edible.

 

Asimina triloba (Common Pawpaw)

The PawPaw tree is an Indiana native and produces a banana-like fruit that ripens in the fall. For that reason it is called the Indiana banana.

 

Amelanchier canadensis (Shadblow Serviceberry)

The berries of the Shadblow Serviceberry are black and ripen in mid to late summer. The berries are often used in jellies and jams.

Diospyros virginiana (Common Persimmon)

Persimmons flower in late spring, and the fruit ripen in the fall. Make sure the fruit has completely ripened and turned orange before eating.

Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory)

Hickory nuts ripen in late summer and may requre a tool to remove the outer husk.
