Diagnostic Characteristics:
Alternately arranged leaves are 15-32" long, bi- to tri-pinnately compound, having a rachis armed with slender prickles. Leaflets are 2-4" long with serrate margins. Ovate buds are solitary with tan to reddish brown scales, from 0.25-0.33" long. Stems are stout and gray to tan colored, and armed with sharp, triangular, 0.125-0.25" tan prickles. Large leaf scars and associated prickles.
